Generous Residents Gift Grand Piano to Village

May 16, 2024

Residents and friends of the Arrowtown Lifestyle Village are now enjoying the cultured sounds of a grand piano in the new Lodge facility, thanks to some wonderful generosity.

“Like most good ideas, this started as an over the fence conversation that really took off”, says Resident Committee member, Evan Paterson. “The plan to donate a grand piano at the new Lodge quickly got handed over to this sub-committee of one. All I knew about pianos was that they have 88 keys and 3 legs so I had to do my research, then take the hat around.

“We had such a huge response from many residents and also the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society, that we were able to buy brand new Feurich 179 grand piano”.

The piano, made from solid Austrian timber, will provide a wonderful addition to the village. “We have three residents who play” says Village Manager, Robyn Frey, “and some friends of the village who enjoy coming in and having a tinkle”.

“We are keen to be a venue for young pianists to practice performing in front of an audience”, says Evan, “and it’s also a focal point for formal events including performances hosted by our friends from ACAS.”

The recent dedication concert featured local pianist Kinga Krupa, weaving a story with sound including pieces by Chopin, Liszt, Debussy and Rachmaninoff.  “I was deeply honoured to present what the piano was capable of, on its inaugural night; It’s various skills, shades and colours of its sounds.” Kinga presented a program including different musical genres and techniques especially prepared for the occasion.

“This very generous donation has elevated the facility,” says Village Manager, Robyn Frey. “Ambience aside, it is a beautiful feature in the lounge area.”
